Bruce Watzman Senior Vice President, National Mining Association
Bruce Watzman is National Mining Association's senior vice president for regulatory affairs. In this capacity he is responsible for managing the association's overall regulatory policy activities to ensure its consistency with the business needs of the association's membership. Additionally, he oversees the public policies issues in Congress and relevant regulatory agencies that advance the health and safety performance of the U.S. mining industry and of manufacturers that provide equipment to the industry. This includes developing legal, regulatory and congressional strategies to advance the association's public policy objectives.
Bruce joined the National Coal Association (NMA's predecessor) in 1980 and has held a variety of positions including Legislative Representative, Director of Leasing and Regulatory Affairs, and Director of Safety and Health. He was promoted to the position of vice president in March 1989 and to Senior Vice President for Regulatory Affairs in November 2008.
Bruce serves on various planning committees for the Mine Safety and Health Administration and the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health. In 2007 he was recently appointed by the Secretary of Health and Human Services to serve as a member of the Mine Safety and Health Research Advisory Committee.
Bruce holds an undergraduate degree from the George Washington University and a postgraduate degree from the University of Maryland.
